Paper assignment #1

In attending the lecture given by Milton Esterow, journalist and owner of Art News Magazine, I was given a more broad understanding of the art review process and more specifically, what makes Art News Magazine distinct. As a young newspaper reporter, Milton Esterow began his interest in art journalism and criticism by offering a more investigative approach uncommon in his field. After acquiring Art News Magazine, Esterow continued this style of art journalism by pursuing in depth interviews the artists, scholars, traders, and others involved in the art world. Providing many personal anecdotes, through Art News Magazine, Esterow offered examples of his thorough approach to journalism. Most notably, he traveled to Europe, having heard of a place where art stolen by the Nazis in World War II was hidden, in an attempt to find and report on the conspiracy. After reporting on his findings, the stolen works were put to auction and returned to the people. Throughout his life Esterow has been proactive in reporting the exclusive stories of the art world.

After the art world steadily grew decentralized, where New York was no longer the only center, more opportunities presented themselves for Esterow and Art News. Yet as the art market is currently suffering, a bittersweet situation has reduced the focus on money and provided for more of an appreciation of art. As the lecture came to a close, I was left unsatisfied as it had little argumentative substance, but in reflection recognize the importance and impact of Milton Esterow’s dedicated life to the art world.
